On the Road to RMMC

2012-narms-front-plug

This column finds many of you about to embark on your trip to Tampa for The Retail Merchandising and Marketing Conference (RMMC) starting this weekend at Saddlebrook Resort. By now you have seen the agenda, know about the keynote speakers and the sessions you want to attend. As an additional incentive to attend, Capital Partners is offering a chance to win a four day cruise to anywhere in the world for our members. There will be more information on how you can participate in the raffle at the registration desk. At the risk of being repetitive, here are a few things we would like to ask attendees of RMMC and all NARMS members to consider.

-To actively engage, be challenged, and sit face to face with your peers as we build and re-organize NARMS.

-To help forge a path to the future.

-To create the kind of dialogue that brings life to an organization.

-Plan together strategies for what NARMS will look like in 3-5yrs.

In short, your association and the RMMC need you. This is a dynamic conference that begs for participation, with substantial opportunity for give and take on subjects that have immediate relevancy to your business. Your voice, ideas, input, point-of-view, experiences and opinions are crucial to the vitality of the conference and the Association. NARMS needs at least one voice in attendance from every member company, no matter the size, if we are to clearly understand your perspective and hear your needs.

We have said it before, but it is worth repeating. If you have registered, come with the notion to engage and interact like never before. If you have not already registered, the only thing missing is you! The agenda and conference registration, as well as sponsorship and exhibitor opportunities for the 2012 RMMC are available now at the Conference Center on www.narms.com. We look forward to seeing you at Saddlebrook! #RMMC560 #RMMC561

C-Store Study Seeks Understanding

More shopper research derived insight was shared when NACS and the Coca-Cola Retailing Research Council (CCRRC) released, Growth, Using Shopper Research to Grow C-Store Sales.” In this study, the trade groups attempt to understand what shoppers say will get them to spend more at convenience store outlets. You can hear what key trading partners are saying by attending The Retail Merchandising and Marketing Conference (RMMC), held April 14 – 17, 2012 at Saddlebrook Resort near Tampa.

The NACS/CCRC report is broken down into four parts. Part One defines shopper research. Shopper research focuses on understanding the shopping occasion. The report explains that this differs from consumer research which seeks to understand how consumers use the product.

Part Two uses in-depth shopper research to define the hierarchy of shopper needs. The main point is that retailers and manufacturers need to deliver on basic shopper needs such as safety, cleanliness, and hospitality before going after higher-level needs of simplicity and ease or time enrichment.

Part Three lays out insights that become translated into five growth platforms. These platforms are different occasions in the shopper life that may change for each visit to the store. These occasions balance a need to be in control versus a desire for diversions from the daily grind.

Part Four of the report reviews two key insights: How convenience retail owners and operators can better understand how shopping occasions drive store choices, and the value of focusing on the shopper perspective as a tool for planning growth strategies.

This review only scratches the surface of the information available in this report. You can download your copy by clicking here. However, there is a more simple and basic principle on display here. Understanding your customer and their customer opens up possibilities and opportunities for all trading partners. As providers of at-retail merchandising and marketing services, we should never turn down a chance to get smarter.

One such chance to get smart is reading and downloading this report from NACS/CCRC. Another is to attend The Retail Merchandising and Marketing Conference (RMMC). The four days of networking, learning and motivation are almost upon us so if you have not registered or made your travel plans, do so today. The agenda and conference registration, as well as sponsorship and exhibitor opportunities for the 2012 RMMC are available now at the Conference Center on www.narms.com. #RMMC561 #RMMC560

Smart Service Companies

The Hub Magazine, a publication of TPN, recently published a story about how the word “smart” has become the preferred position of many goods and services in the marketplace. The article says that this movement has produced equally smart consumers who use technology to gain expanded knowledge to tell manufacturers and retailers exactly what they want and what they will pay. The main point of the story is that retailers need to be just as intelligent as their shoppers. There are several examples of retailers who seem to be hitting that lofty mark.

We can take the argument one step further. It requires equally smart at-retail merchandising and marketing service companies to help retailers and suppliers to live up to the rising standards of the go-to-market system. One way to get smart is to attend The Retail Merchandising and Marketing Conference (RMMC) that will be held April 14 – 17, 2012 at Saddlebrook Resort near Tampa. But this is not just one-way communication. Your voice, ideas, input, point-of-view, experiences and opinions are crucial to the vitality of the conference and the enhanced position of the Association.

Smart service companies can connect the dots between smart products, smart retailers and smart consumers. It is obvious that heightened requirements and expectations make in-store execution and speed-to-market that much more important. The margin for error is shrinking and the standards for delivering the desired customer experience are rising.

The members of NARMS are at a unique time in our history. As we re-imagine and rethink what it means to be a member of NARMS, the bar is being raised by smart consumers on the trading partners that we serve. It is a challenging time, but it is also an exciting opportunity to explore the possibilities.

Attending RMMC can be your first step to enlightenment. If you have not already registered, the only thing missing is you! The agenda and conference registration, as well as sponsorship and exhibitor opportunities for the 2012 RMMC are available now at the Conference Center on www.narms.com. You can also carry the Mobile Conference Center on your smart phone by scanning the QR code. #RMMC561

Out-of-Stock Battle Rages On

Two recent news items underline the need for exceptional execution at shelf level and the value of at-retail merchandising and marketing service providers who are on the front lines of retail every day. The industry will be getting together in one short month for The Retail Merchandising & Marketing Conference (RMMC). The event will be held on April 14-17, 2012 at Saddlebrook Resort, north of Tampa.

In mid-February, the chief merchandising officer of Wal-Mart told a group of suppliers that the retail giant could boost U.S. sales by $5 billion per year by keeping store shelves fully stocked. The company later said the amount was a rough estimate designed to motivate employees and suppliers, but the point was delivered loud and clear. Wal-Mart does currently work with a NARMS member to walk the aisles and monitor for out-of-stocks.

Another news item reported on an AisleBuyer study that said 75 percent of consumers would switch brands if offered real-time mobile promotions by a competitive product delivered to their smartphones while shopping in a store aisle. The promotion and the medium are more important to smartphone owners than brand loyalty. With these factors making a major difference, it is not hard to imagine what would happen if the consumer encountered an out-of-stock after getting the promotion. A major opportunity missed.

The issue with out-of-stocks is simple: if it is not on the shelf, it is not for sale. Even the largest retailer and the most savvy brand marketer are a prisoner to that simple truth. Luckily, the members of NARMS are experts at providing merchandising services in-store that can greatly reduce out-of-stocks, boost the bottom line and enhance brand loyalty and market share.

The members of NARMS are getting together at the RMMC to discuss these and many other important topics. A voice from every member of the association is crucial to the future of the association and the industry. If you have not already registered, the only thing missing is you! The agenda and conference registration, as well as sponsorship and exhibitor opportunities for the 2012 RMMC are available now at the Conference Center on www.narms.com. #RMMC561
