Almost since its founding, NARMS has been a leader in helping its members to source qualified at-retail merchandising and marketing service store representatives to execute the in-store initiatives of their clients. The Recruiter, JobBank and Career Connection have been tremendous tools for the industry and a major benefit of membership in the Association. While that is still the case, the evolution and maturation of the job board industry has caused NARMS to take a long look at how our members post their job opportunities and the associated costs.
In order to maximize the effectiveness of your job listings and allow them to reach a larger targeted audience, NARMS is making changes to the way you submit your postings. These changes will take effect on October 1st, and will require more specific wording and information such as city-state and zip code. Stay tuned for more information on support and training to be delivered via the NARMS Webinar Series scheduled for October.
Why make these changes? When you list a job on JobBank and Career Connection, they are aggregated into other top job board sites to give you maximum exposure. These feeds are sent to sites including Indeed.com, SimplyHired.com and also are posted to social media groups on Twitter and Facebook which then aggregate into many other job boards. These leading job sites have increased their requirements for accepting our job feeds to reduce spam-like listings which may not represent the specific and reputable job opportunities that their users are looking for. The results of the changes being made by NARMS will ensure that each of your job offers will get the maximum exposure and produce the quality candidates that you deserve.
The modifications have also caused a review of the program pricing. We think you will agree that the increases are nominal considering that the changes help ensure the effectiveness, visibility and credibility of your job listings and the Association in general. The following member program pricing will take effect on October 1st.
Single job listing: $ 99 for a 30-day period
Five up listing: $ 198 for a 30-day period (one job rotating to top of the list every 5th day)
JobBank Showcase: $ 400 for a 30-day period (4 job listings with company logo)
JobBank Unlimited: $ 1,500 for a 30-day period (unlimited listings)
As a result of these enhancements, The JobBank, Career Connection and Recruiter will be undergoing maintenance on Saturday, September 29 between approximately 3-5 pm ET. We apologize for any inconvenience and thank you for your patience during this process.

There are many exciting changes going on within NARMS, THE trade association for at-retail merchandising and marketing service companies. This week, as part of those ongoing developments, the members were emailed a link to a new downloadable NARMS Member Handbook. The .pdf document is also located within the members area of www.narms.com. The handbook is a snap shot of all the features and benefits of membership and is designed to help members get maximum value from their affiliation with NARMS.
The NARMS Member Handbook provides some interesting history about the development of NARMS from the early years in 1995-96 to the present day. Another section highlights the current members of the NARMS Board of Directors. There is also a section on the new NARMS headquarters staff now located in Broomfield, Colorado.
The heart of the document lies in detailed descriptions of the benefits that are currently available to members. Among these offerings are things like the NARMS Member Directory, the Recruiter, JobBank, Career Connection, Affiliate Member Programs, Conferences, the Infoshare Library and educational resources like NARMScertifyU and the NARMS Webinar series. The Handbook also covers the various member communication tools such as NARMS Newsfeed, Top Shelf, What’s In-Store and the official Association social media channels.
As you read this Handbook, you will see that NARMS is dedicated to providing continuous improvement to the at-retail service industry. Many of our members join for one or two specific purposes and later find out that there are many support functions available in the areas of industry research, education, networking and member programs. This document will help you avail your company to those services and help you take your place as one of the leaders in the Association and the industry.
This being the last column of the year, let us be the first to wish a great big Happy New Year to the members of the at-retail merchandising and marketing community. The leadership and staff at NARMS International are excited to move the Association along after a year of contemplation and transition. NARMS JobBank and the Recruiter database have been experiencing robust levels of activity as at-retail marketing service reps and hiring companies use this original and custom built member resource to bring professional service to their retailer and CPG manufacturer customers.
The New Year brings fresh perspectives and new opportunities. This is particularly true for our Association as several things are converging simultaneously to shape the future of the industry and NARMS. Make a resolution right now to be part of that future.
A couple of recent developments have raised the hopes of retailers, CPG manufacturers and the U.S. economy as we enter the New Year. A huge Black Friday brought the start of what is expected to be record holiday sales and served as a gauge into the collective intentions of American consumers. That sentiment was confirmed this week with the release of The Conference Board Consumer Confidence Index for the month of November.
Any analysis of the economy has to be taken with a grain of salt. The roller coaster ride of predicted recoveries and subsequent dips have proven to be undependable at best. However, the Index improved greatly in November after six months of steady decline. The Index now stands at 56.0, up from 40.9 in October. This index was set at 100 in 1985. The Present Situation Index increased to 38.3 from 27.1. The Expectations Index rose to 67.8 from 50.0.
Consumers that say business conditions are good increased to 13.3 percent from 11.2 percent. Those claiming jobs are plentiful increased to 5.8 percent from 3.6 percent. Consumers who anticipate business conditions to improve over the next six months increased to 13.6 percent from 10.2 percent. Consumers expecting more jobs in the months ahead rose to 12.9 percent from 10.8 percent. Those who anticipate an increase in their incomes rose to 14.9 percent from 11.1 percent.
For members of the at-retail merchandising and marketing industry, another important indicator is the level of in-store activity being sought by retailers and manufacturers. Judging by the level of activity on NARMS JobBank and NARMS Recruiter database, business is healthy as NARMS members are seeking more merchandisers to help them fulfill their mission at stores around the country. One of the more popular uses for www.narms.com is for staffing purposes. Tens of thousands of field reps use the Recruiter to help find merchandising and other in-store work. The economy has been showing brief glimpses of improvement for months, but has been awaiting the big breakthrough that will signal more optimistic times for business people. As in the past, the first sign of economic thawing is a loosening of consumer spending. According to a story in Home Channel News, consumers represent 70% of the economy. Customer Growth Partners reports that the important holiday shopping period has yielded a 5% sales increase, the biggest year-over-year growth since 2005. This is all occurring in the face of a 9.8% unemployment rate. But that might be changing too. Now it appears that U.S. companies are starting to fire up their recruiting by advertising thousands of job openings.
According to The Wall Street Journal, internet job postings as tracked by Indeed Inc. rose to 4.7 million on Dec. 1, up from 2.7 million a year earlier. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there were 3.2 million private-sector job openings at the end of October, up from 2.3 million a year earlier.
Indeed Inc. also tells us that many of these new job postings are in the retail industry. As retailer cash position improves, it stands to reason that they will begin to hire again in order to keep pace with the uptick in consumer activity.
What does this mean to the members of the professional at-retail merchandising and marketing services industry? Only time will tell, but here are a few thoughts. As retailers begin to hire, current merchandisers may be enticed to leverage their in-store experience to take full-time retail opportunities. This will make the role of recruiting quality merchandisers more important than ever. On the hand, an increase in retailer and manufacturer spending on labor does not automatically mean an increase in staff. Outsourcing of important shelf work may become more commonplace to free up existing store staffs to take care of the customer.
