Almost since its founding, NARMS has been a leader in helping its members to source qualified at-retail merchandising and marketing service store representatives to execute the in-store initiatives of their clients. The Recruiter, JobBank and Career Connection have been tremendous tools for the industry and a major benefit of membership in the Association. While that is still the case, the evolution and maturation of the job board industry has caused NARMS to take a long look at how our members post their job opportunities and the associated costs.
In order to maximize the effectiveness of your job listings and allow them to reach a larger targeted audience, NARMS is making changes to the way you submit your postings. These changes will take effect on October 1st, and will require more specific wording and information such as city-state and zip code. Stay tuned for more information on support and training to be delivered via the NARMS Webinar Series scheduled for October.
Why make these changes? When you list a job on JobBank and Career Connection, they are aggregated into other top job board sites to give you maximum exposure. These feeds are sent to sites including Indeed.com, SimplyHired.com and also are posted to social media groups on Twitter and Facebook which then aggregate into many other job boards. These leading job sites have increased their requirements for accepting our job feeds to reduce spam-like listings which may not represent the specific and reputable job opportunities that their users are looking for. The results of the changes being made by NARMS will ensure that each of your job offers will get the maximum exposure and produce the quality candidates that you deserve.
The modifications have also caused a review of the program pricing. We think you will agree that the increases are nominal considering that the changes help ensure the effectiveness, visibility and credibility of your job listings and the Association in general. The following member program pricing will take effect on October 1st.
Single job listing: $ 99 for a 30-day period
Five up listing: $ 198 for a 30-day period (one job rotating to top of the list every 5th day)
JobBank Showcase: $ 400 for a 30-day period (4 job listings with company logo)
JobBank Unlimited: $ 1,500 for a 30-day period (unlimited listings)
As a result of these enhancements, The JobBank, Career Connection and Recruiter will be undergoing maintenance on Saturday, September 29 between approximately 3-5 pm ET. We apologize for any inconvenience and thank you for your patience during this process.
You can contact Fiona Lipscomb of the NARMS staff with any questions by clicking here and you will have an opportunity to interact by taking part in the webinar in October.
There are many exciting changes going on within NARMS, THE trade association for at-retail merchandising and marketing service companies. This week, as part of those ongoing developments, the members were emailed a link to a new downloadable NARMS Member Handbook. The .pdf document is also located within the members area of www.narms.com. The handbook is a snap shot of all the features and benefits of membership and is designed to help members get maximum value from their affiliation with NARMS.
The NARMS Member Handbook provides some interesting history about the development of NARMS from the early years in 1995-96 to the present day. Another section highlights the current members of the NARMS Board of Directors. There is also a section on the new NARMS headquarters staff now located in Broomfield, Colorado.
The heart of the document lies in detailed descriptions of the benefits that are currently available to members. Among these offerings are things like the NARMS Member Directory, the Recruiter, JobBank, Career Connection, Affiliate Member Programs, Conferences, the Infoshare Library and educational resources like NARMScertifyU and the NARMS Webinar series. The Handbook also covers the various member communication tools such as NARMS Newsfeed, Top Shelf, What’s In-Store and the official Association social media channels.
As you read this Handbook, you will see that NARMS is dedicated to providing continuous improvement to the at-retail service industry. Many of our members join for one or two specific purposes and later find out that there are many support functions available in the areas of industry research, education, networking and member programs. This document will help you avail your company to those services and help you take your place as one of the leaders in the Association and the industry.
This being the last column of the year, let us be the first to wish a great big Happy New Year to the members of the at-retail merchandising and marketing community. The leadership and staff at NARMS International are excited to move the Association along after a year of contemplation and transition. Here are just a few things to look forward to as you begin to plan your 2012.
Tom Caddell brings a lifetime of experience in the industry as the new NARMS Executive Director. Caddell and the staff are looking forward to bringing a new and strategic direction to build and brand the association name of NARMS in new, valuable and ever exciting ways.
The 2012 new membership drive and membership renewal is right around the corner. Do not forget to look for your renewal notice and take action so you do not miss out on any valuable membership services.
The 2012 Spring Conference is coming up and in its 17th year will feature a new name. The Retail Merchandising & Marketing Conference will be held at Saddlebrook Resort in Tampa Florida on April 14-17. Conference Chair Stefan Midford, the NARMS staff and the NARMS Board of Directors are putting together a value- packed agenda for our annual showcase event. Look for exciting agenda, registration and sponsorship announcements coming up shortly at the Conference Center on www.narms.com.
NARMScertifyU continues to provide on-line career building courses for at-retail marketing service representatives. NARMScertifyU offers eight courses for $15 each: Mystery Shopping, Retail Visit Excellence, Merchandising Standards, Demonstrations, Event Marketing, Fixture Installation, Train the Trainer and Team Lead Skills. Block pricing is available for member companies to purchase on-line courses for their field reps at a great savings.
NARMS JobBank and the Recruiter database have been experiencing robust levels of activity as at-retail marketing service reps and hiring companies use this original and custom built member resource to bring professional service to their retailer and CPG manufacturer customers.
The New Year brings fresh perspectives and new opportunities. This is particularly true for our Association as several things are converging simultaneously to shape the future of the industry and NARMS. Make a resolution right now to be part of that future.
A couple of recent developments have raised the hopes of retailers, CPG manufacturers and the U.S. economy as we enter the New Year. A huge Black Friday brought the start of what is expected to be record holiday sales and served as a gauge into the collective intentions of American consumers. That sentiment was confirmed this week with the release of The Conference Board Consumer Confidence Index for the month of November.
Any analysis of the economy has to be taken with a grain of salt. The roller coaster ride of predicted recoveries and subsequent dips have proven to be undependable at best. However, the Index improved greatly in November after six months of steady decline. The Index now stands at 56.0, up from 40.9 in October. This index was set at 100 in 1985. The Present Situation Index increased to 38.3 from 27.1. The Expectations Index rose to 67.8 from 50.0.
Consumers that say business conditions are good increased to 13.3 percent from 11.2 percent. Those claiming jobs are plentiful increased to 5.8 percent from 3.6 percent. Consumers who anticipate business conditions to improve over the next six months increased to 13.6 percent from 10.2 percent. Consumers expecting more jobs in the months ahead rose to 12.9 percent from 10.8 percent. Those who anticipate an increase in their incomes rose to 14.9 percent from 11.1 percent.
For members of the at-retail merchandising and marketing industry, another important indicator is the level of in-store activity being sought by retailers and manufacturers. Judging by the level of activity on NARMS JobBank and NARMS Recruiter database, business is healthy as NARMS members are seeking more merchandisers to help them fulfill their mission at stores around the country. If your company is staffing up for the surge, consider taking out an expanded listing on www.narms.com and availing your company to the original, best and most cost effective recruiting tool in the business. If you already use the Recruiter, pushing your jobs to the forefront by advertising on NARMS JobBank can help you secure the best and brightest.
Each year, companies who belong to a trade association have to make the choice to renew their membership for another year. No doubt, that decision causes a review of the cost versus benefit before the final decision is made. At NARMS, we are happy that so many at-retail merchandising and marketing service companies decided to join us again in 2011. We also want to remind you that if you are seeking added value features, there are many available every day by getting reacquainted with www.narms.com.
When visiting the site, you see a front page filled with information. The banner section gets you filled in on upcoming events, conferences and services such as the IFBA Top to Top Conference coming up on May 17-19 or the recently completed 16th Annual NARMS Spring Conference. There is already preliminary information on the 2012 Spring Conference that will be held in Tampa, Florida. There is also a link to each individual service division of NARMS. The MSO, Event Marketing, PIC, IFBA and Associate Divisions all have their own unique landing page.
NARMS is also committed to fresh content and thought leadership brought to you through two weekly blogs, Top Shelf and What’s In-Store. These are also sent out directly to your email box every Tuesday and Thursday. There is also a spot for NARMS corporate press releases. An advertising bar near the top of the home page includes a direct link to the NARMScertifyU program for your field reps and training staff. Upcoming segments of the hugely popular NARMS Webinar Series can be found by clicking the Webinar tab.
Under the Members Area pull down menu, make sure you check out Deals for Members, where you can find links to companies who have put together special programs for NARMS members at attractive rates. Services include transportation, health care options, business communication needs and vital human resource needs such as background screening services.
Each member of NARMS enjoys a searchable listing that can be used by CPG manufacturers and retailers to find the service company to fit their needs. Members have the option to upgrade to an Expanded Listing in order to provide even more information and links to their corporate site, blogs or videos.
One of the more popular uses for www.narms.com is for staffing purposes. Tens of thousands of field reps use the Recruiter to help find merchandising and other in-store work. Many of our members with Expanded Listings use the Recruiter as their main staffing database. Other members go a step further and choose to advertise their jobs using the NARMS JobBank. All of these listings also utilize social media to not only draw people to the site, but also push out the information to NARMS official Social Media Channels.
This column only scratches the surface to describe all the value added features of www.narms.com. To see for yourself, visit us today and keep coming back often.
By now, most people know that Social Media needs to be added to almost all business communication outreach programs. Among the top benefactors of these channels are recruiters, sourcers and HR managers who realize that many seeking jobs have taken to Social Media as an important means by which to market themselves. Those who advertise on NARMS JobBank already enjoy the increased exposure due to a comprehensive Social Media strategy. On Tuesday, February 8 at 1:00 PM CST, Cathy Plumb will help explore the topic in the next NARMS Webinar - The Thrill of the Hunt - Social Media. The NARMS Webinar Series is sponsored by Natural Insight and brought to you through the technology of ReadyTalk.
Many who are charged with finding human resources for the members of the at-retail merchandising and marketing services industry are ready to add social media recruiting to their strategy but just do not know how. During this one-hour session, Plumb will give a how-to guide including the nuts and bolts of starting a Social Media Network, candidate search strategies using Social Media, how to increase and retain your Social Media following and new sourcing resources to add to your recruiting arsenal. As always, attendees will have an opportunity to interact with Plumb via the chat function.
Plumb is a great resource to take your recruiting team over the jumps. She is a successful recruiter with over seven years in high volume part time field recruiting. Her expertise and strong working knowledge uniquely qualifies her to share proven sourcing and recruiting strategies for your recruiting success.
This NARMS Webinar is another in a series of member educational offerings by NARMS – U. The session is complimentary to NARMS members as a membership service but is also made available to other interested persons at a non-member rate of $99.95. In the current challenging economy, you will not want to miss out on this added value for your recruiting team. Click here and put the thrill of the hunt into your Social Media strategy.
It is not an understatement to say that recruiting and maintaining a strong field organization is always top of mind for the management of NARMS members companies. The ability to have the field reps in place to conduct customer programs in thousands of retail locations is vital to at-retail merchandising and marketing service company success. However, just as critical is the ability to find and attract headquarter and field management professionals to sell, train, manage and account for customer programs. NARMS Career Connection is a great way to reach out to the retail merchandising talent pool
Career Connection contains a database of professional positions available in the retail services industry. This database allows you to search the current career jobs that companies have available in a number of professional categories and locations. This list of jobs is current and is maintained and updated in a timely fashion. The Career Connection should be used for professional positions only. To list a field position, please refer to the JobBank. Open professional positions can be listed in the Career Connection on www.narms.com at a rate of $100 for members and $150 for non-members for a 30 day posting. Payment is by credit card.
For those individuals seeking an at-retail management or staff position, NARMS has created a service called In Transition where individuals can post their resumes, cover letters and photos which will be searchable for management level position that are posted in the Career Connection or on the variety of social networks. In Transition is available to NARMS Individual members.
When seeking new management and staff talent, what better place to look than within the industry itself to find qualified managers and individuals who are currently out-of-work or are just looking for a change. Career Connection can be the answer for both the recruiter and the recruited to find the perfect match for both.
The economy has been showing brief glimpses of improvement for months, but has been awaiting the big breakthrough that will signal more optimistic times for business people. As in the past, the first sign of economic thawing is a loosening of consumer spending. According to a story in Home Channel News, consumers represent 70% of the economy. Customer Growth Partners reports that the important holiday shopping period has yielded a 5% sales increase, the biggest year-over-year growth since 2005. This is all occurring in the face of a 9.8% unemployment rate. But that might be changing too. Now it appears that U.S. companies are starting to fire up their recruiting by advertising thousands of job openings.
According to The Wall Street Journal, internet job postings as tracked by Indeed Inc. rose to 4.7 million on Dec. 1, up from 2.7 million a year earlier. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there were 3.2 million private-sector job openings at the end of October, up from 2.3 million a year earlier.
Indeed Inc. also tells us that many of these new job postings are in the retail industry. As retailer cash position improves, it stands to reason that they will begin to hire again in order to keep pace with the uptick in consumer activity.
What does this mean to the members of the professional at-retail merchandising and marketing services industry? Only time will tell, but here are a few thoughts. As retailers begin to hire, current merchandisers may be enticed to leverage their in-store experience to take full-time retail opportunities. This will make the role of recruiting quality merchandisers more important than ever. On the hand, an increase in retailer and manufacturer spending on labor does not automatically mean an increase in staff. Outsourcing of important shelf work may become more commonplace to free up existing store staffs to take care of the customer.
NARMS is ready to help you navigate through the recovery with two recruitment resources. Members pay $85 to post jobs in the JobBank. It is a 30-day posting that allows the same position to be listed in multiple locations. The Recruiter is a searchable database available to members with an expanded listing. If you have not advertised a job on JobBank for awhile, you may want to reconnect with this terrific resource. Your listing goes far beyond just those searching www.narms.com because it is also automatically sent out to several popular job search sites and social networks. It is truly a one-stop shop for all your recruiting needs. NARMScertifyU, our on-line training tool, is available for you and your at-retail field reps to improve their skills and abilities. Block pricing is available for companies who want to purchase this training directly for their field force.
No matter the shape of the new economic landscape, the core competency of NARMS members will always be building and managing a highly-trained and professional decentralized workforce ready to be employed at a moments notice. Taking advantage of membership resources to maintain and expand this foothold seems to make even more sense against these new economic measurements.
The NARMS = Opportunity membership campaign that was launched in October encourages all of our members to spread the news that NARMS is committed to improving the professionalism and raising the standards of at-retail execution. Even though the organization is undergoing a leadership transition, the commitment toward building the ranks of the membership has never been stronger. It is still vitally important that our members be our best evangelists. It is also particularly important that our members renew their own memberships for two reasons. First, the show of strength goes a long way toward building momentum and attracting new members. Secondly, you will not want to miss out on any of the benefits of membership, even for a day.
It has never been easier for you to renew your membership. For the first time in history, you have the option to renew your membership online with a credit card payment at http://www.narms.com/renew. Or, if you are so inclined, you may still use the traditional method of completing the hard copy renewal form that was previously emailed and paying by check or credit card. If paying by check, please mail your payment to: NARMS, c/o The Pineries Bank, 3601 Main Street, Stevens Point, WI 54481. Our general mailing address is NARMS, 2417 Post Road, Suite A, Stevens Point, WI 54481.
NARMS membership renewal and expanded listing payments are due December 31, 2010. As a matter of process, all unpaid expanded listings will be turned off on January 4, 2011. This will result in the loss of valuable membership features such as use of the Recruiter database and the NARMS JobBank. For any help with the renewal process or to get your questions answered, contact Sue Witkowski or Paulette Blaskey. Their phone number is 715-342-0948.
There is no doubt that membership has declined in recent years. However, your trade association still remains strong and the future looks extremely bright. In the last few weeks, we have seen a flurry of new membership activity and expect it to continue. The NARMS staff, guided by the board of directors and division committees, is hard at work continuing to plan what promises to be a great Spring Conference in Monterey, California in April.
NARMS is only as strong as its members make it. So while you are out spreading the good word, do not forget to renew your own membership. It is the ultimate statement in your belief in the organization and a commitment to excellence for the industry.
As experts in the field of at-retail marketing and merchandising services, we all know the value of a good sampling program. So in the spirit of practicing what we preach, NARMS will be offering a sample of our NARMS JobBank service. And although it is not free, it is offered at a greatly reduced rate. On August 16th from 12:00AM to 11:59PM CDT, we are offering one JobBank ad per member company for the reduced price of $10.00! What a great time for you to try JobBank for the first time, reconnect with this terrific resource or save a little money on your job advertising plans.
You don’t have to do anything special, just go to Post a Job in the JobBank from the dropdown list under Jobs/Careers on www.narms.com on August 16th to place your job posting. If you have multiple listings, the price will be adjusted manually for the first ad per company and additional ads will be billed at the normal rate. Those companies who are taking advantage of the JobBank Showcase program will be able to post a fifth ad on that date for $10.00. The FiveUp! option will be billed an additional $80.00 for a total of $90.00, not the usual $160.00 for a savings of $70.00! Contact Cindy Liebl at firstname.lastname@example.org with any questions.
The JobBank is a powerful resource to help fill your field resource needs. It is searched 575,000 times each month and provides greater coverage through RSS feeds of your listings to top job sites and social networking applications. Why post jobs on multiple sites when all of your job posting needs can be met by using this one handy resource that is viewed regularly by trained and experienced field merchandisers? The regular charge for a 30 day job posting is $80 for NARMS members and $150 for nonmembers.
NARMS also offers unlimited postings in the JobBank for 30 days for $1,000 for members and $1,250 for non-members. The fee must be pre-paid via credit card (Visa, MasterCard, or American Express) and the posting is in effect for 30 days from the date of payment.
NARMS JobBank has been serving the industry well since the beginning of our trade association. If you have never used it, or want to experience the benefits of its constantly evolving reach, there has never been a better time.
