In addition to all the excitement building over The Retail Merchandising and Marketing Conference (RMMC), NARMS announced last week that it will exhibit at three prominent industry trade shows in 2013. As a service to the members of the at-retail merchandising and marketing service industry, the Association is offering members an exclusive opportunity to join us and kick the tires of these big retail events without a huge risk or financial commitment.
Marketing your company at a trade show always comes with the uncertainty that you will get return on your investment. NARMS will have a booth at each of the following events and we encourage you to use it as a home base for your business meetings and to promote your affiliation with our Association. Participation will allow you to determine for yourself if you want to market your company at these events in 2014.
Here is some information on the shows:
NGA (National Grocer’s Association): February 10th – 13th at The Mirage in Las Vegas, NV. The NGA Show offers something for everyone. Trading partners from retailers, manufacturers and suppliers will all find a wealth of good ideas and new information in the educational workshops and the NGA EXPO floor. The EXPO Floor is completely sold out, the earliest date in the history of the Show.
Expo West : March 8th – 10th at the Anaheim Convention Center, Anaheim, CA. The Natural Products marketplace is growing. As a result, Natural Products Expo West is growing as well. More retail buyers are walking the show floor at Expo West than ever before, looking for the newest quality products to bring back to their stores. Over 60,000 industry members attended Expo West this past March.
GlobalShop : April 16th – 18th at McCormick Place, Chicago, IL. GlobalShop is the largest annual event for retail design and shopper marketing. It is the only show in the world where you can find the largest, most comprehensive array of store fixture companies and more in-store solutions than any live event in the nation.
Click here to download an informational flyer and learn more about these special opportunities. These are high traffic events so you will want to act quickly as these shows do sell out. We hope you will join us as together we display that NARMS members provide valuable, innovative and necessary services to the retail industry.
Did you know that your NARMS membership allows you to display at GlobalShop at a significant discount? The Retail Solutions Event runs from March 28-30 in Las Vegas at the Sands Expo and Convention Center. NARMS is one of three associations who are co-sponsoring the largest annual trade show and conference dedicated to store design, visual merchandising and shopper marketing. Each year it brings together thousands of qualified buyers from the leading brands and retailers to source new and innovative solutions.
Over 80% of the top 100 retailers and top 100 consumer goods companies attend GlobalShop on an annual basis. Exhibiting at GlobalShop is the only way for an industry supplier to have access to show attendees. GlobalShop protects your investment in the show by limiting access to non-exhibiting suppliers so you do not have to worry about seeing your competition walking the floor.
As mentioned earlier, NARMS members receive a substantial discount on their exhibit space at GlobalShop. To qualify for the discount an exhibiting company must be a confirmed member of the association. Exhibitors who are not yet NARMS members may still receive the exhibit space discount by joining NARMS before January 28, 2011. Contact Paulette Blaskey, Director of Membership at [email protected] or call her at 715.342.0948. The NARMS staff will confirm your membership before that date and GlobalShop will make the appropriate adjustment to your invoiced price. Please note that the association has the final determination on membership status. Companies that have had a status change since being given the membership discount may be re-invoiced at the higher rate. No refunds or adjustments can be made after January 28, 2011.
NARMS International is also sponsoring an educational session at GlobalShop on Tuesday, March 29 at 3:00 p.m. The session, “Full-Price/Full-Profit, Yes, It Is Still Possible”, will be led by Mark Hunter and will contain steps retailers and vendors can both take to maximize their price and avoid using discounting as sales strategy.
But remember, you can only get the discount if you are a member in good standing with NARMS. If you have been meaning to join or have just not gotten around to renewing, now is the time. Get more information and register for GlobalShop by clicking here.
Various reports from industry analysts and the Commerce Department are describing improved, and in some cases, even optimistic retail sales results for the all important holiday shopping season. For members of the at-retail merchandising and marketing services industry, that is welcome news. As some parts of the country are digging out from a record setting snowfall, the economy is also showing signs of recovery. Retail sales are leading the charge as an important indicator of consumer confidence. Shoppers, although still vigilant, are starting to dig out of a long and heavy spending lull which brings the retail industry new meaning when wishing each other a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
For NARMS, the holidays mean that it is time to put a bow on the many offerings that enable our members to have a happy new year. In the spirit of the season, we are making a list of some things to look forward to.

As reported in Progressive Grocer, Mark Hunter will talk profits at the 2011 GlobalShop show. NARMS International is sponsoring the educational session to be held on Tuesday, March 29 at 3:00 p.m. The session, “Full-Price/Full-Profit, Yes, It’s Still Possible”, will contain steps retailers and vendors can both take to maximize their price and avoid using discounting as sales strategy.
According to Hunter, discounting has become a strategy too often used as a tool to build sales; resulting in conditioning the customer into believing there is no reason to pay full-price. At GlobalShop, which runs from March 28-30 in Las Vegas, he will explain how techniques being used by others may be applied to benefit both retailers and suppliers and result in a more profitable industry in both developed and emerging markets.
Hunter helps individuals and companies identify better prospects, close more sales, and profitably build more long-term customer relationships. He is a consultative selling expert, specializing in custom-tailored sales programs that allow businesses to gain the edge they need to compete and win in the marketplace. To find out more about Hunter and to receive his weekly sales tip, visit www.thesaleshunter.com.
NARMS is proud to have taken a leadership role in GlobalShop for several years now. The annual show gives retailers and brand marketers a place where they can visit over 600 suppliers in one location while exhibitors meet thousands of buyers representing the fastest-growing retail chains and the Top 200 Global Brands.
NARMS is one of three associations who are co-sponsoring GlobalShop, the world’s largest annual trade show and conference dedicated to store design, visual merchandising and shopper marketing. The show is divided into six sections of the retail design industry: The Store Fixture Show, The Visual Merchandising Show, Store Design & Operations, The Digital Store, At-Retail Marketplace and Retail Marketing Services. The other co-sponsors are A.R.E. (Association for Retail Environments) and POPAI (The Global Association for Marketing at Retail.)
March and April are annually a very busy time as the conference season kicks off in earnest. Make your plans now to see Hunter and the other NARMS sponsored activities at GlobalShop and while you are at it, add the 16th Annual NARMS Meeting Spring Conference and Exhibition scheduled for April 9-12 in Monterey, CA.
Last April in Colorado Springs, we introduced the RORI project. RORI stands for Return on Retail Investment. The announcement had the gathering buzzing with excitement and anticipation. Today, we take a quick look at the status of the project and what we can expect to see and hear at the upcoming NARMS Spring Conference at the Saddlebrook Resort in Tampa. On Monday, April 19, a General Session featuring Bart Flaherty of GroupM, Phil Lauria of Pelco Advisors, Jerry O’Brien of the Kohl Center for Retail Excellence at the University of Wisconsin - Madison, and Mary Jo Bastuba of Nintendo will bring us up to speed on this industry changing movement.
RORI is a consortium of companies who are coming together to use data and analysis to develop a fact based understanding about how in-store activities drive return on investment. The movement has already created a common language between retailers, manufacturers and suppliers. It requires agreement from manufacturers and/or retailers to analyze actual retail programs being executed in-market. These real examples and case studies will be used to develop white papers, presentations and databases that contribute to true understanding. This knowledge will be used in PR initiatives and by NARMS members to chart a new strategic direction for their companies. And will provide the knowledge assets to sell in their programs at higher success rates.
RORI is not a static 200 page power point presentation. It is data in a live dashboard that can be queried by any NARMS member to build custom presentations, selling templates, reports and analysis on how specific retail program deliver lift and ROI.
Sponsorship of RORI will give NARMS high visibility when case studies and results become available. It will position NARMS as the thought leader in retail. It is also designed to further expand membership to include manufacturers and suppliers not currently involved in the industry, invigorating the Association with new ideas and fresh perspectives.
To date, the study has been designed and launched, gained an objective educational engagement through the University of Wisconsin, and achieved its first four foundational members. In addition to Spring Conference, RORI will be participating in GlobalShop in March and The ARF Conference in June.
There is still plenty of room for NARMS members to get involved. Foundational membership will remain open through March. Any clients can be invited to join and Bart Flaherty will be happy to help pitch RORI. He can be contacted at: [email protected]

It is a natural exercise of the human condition to take a deep breath and reflect on the year that was. We always wish each other a very, “Happy New Year,” with the thought of reaffirming and reestablishing our relationships for another calendar year. Yet I can’t help but think of a different meaning for last year. At NARMS International, 2008 was really a happy “New” year with all of the new and exciting developments designed to propel our association into the future. Never before in its history has NARMS been in a better position to serve the members of the at-retail merchandising and marketing industry, those who are seeking great retail jobs with our members, and the outstanding manufacturers and retailers who comprise the end customer of our unique and diverse services.
Early in the year, our leadership decided that it was time for another look at our association’s strategic direction. Our Board of Directors came together and took an in-depth look at who we are, what we do and what we want to be. The outcome is what we now call our Strat Plan and is the genesis for the many new features and services that you have experienced this year. Great strategy yields powerful tactics, of which I will only name a few. And rest assured there is more to come.
The most visible of the new developments is our adoption of a Web 2.0 platform for www.narms.com. And while the look and feel of the website is enhanced, it’s the tools and techniques in the background that make the real difference. Without getting into numbers, the end result is that much more traffic is being generated. Many more people are visiting and they are staying for longer periods of time enhancing our member’s opportunities for exposure to new customers and to new field representatives. Those who list jobs now have their ad pushed out via RSS feeds to many other job seeking sites, as well as JobBank. We also enhanced our human resource generating tools through introduction of One Call Now and Twitter, which both push opportunities out to professional field reps via their cell phones, PDAs and PCs. It’s a mobile solution for a mobile audience. Simply stated, there is no better time to use The Recruiter and to list a job in the JobBank.
Based on those who are taking advantage, our monthly Webinar Series has been a great success with our members who are enjoying the opportunity to spend an hour of education without having to leave the friendly confines of their offices. Content has been planned for this new vehicle through mid-year, and there are many more prospects in development.
Of course, we are looking forward to another great conference in Colorado Springs , but this year will be different as we will be including a virtual trade show opportunity for our exhibitors. This experience will enhance the networking opportunities past just a few days in the Spring and will bring a new power to our relationships with our vendors. And speaking of that, NARMS Associate Members now have their own official division with the walls of NARMS. It is a sign of an even deeper commitment between our service members, and those companies who continue to development new tools and services to make our lives easier and our value greater.
And did I mention individual memberships? How about our charter memberships in the Center for Retailing Excellence at the University of Wisconsin – Madison? And what about the growing NARMS social network on Facebook? GlobalShop? The IFBA Top-to-Top Conference?
Whew! It’s been one heck of a “New” Year.
